Have you heard of Emmanuel Wynne ? Everyone knows Jack Rackham (aka Calico Jack), Edward Teach (Blackbeard), but unfortunately the story ofEmmanuel Wynne is rarely known, even though he was the creator of the pirate flag as we know it today, and he was… French !

Emmanuel Wynne (or Wynn in English-language accounts) was a French pirate born in 1650 who died around 1700 in the Caribbean. He was the first to fly a skull with crossed bones on his flag and is considered the creator of the Jolly Roger. In fact, the expression Jolly Roger is said to come from an English corruption of the French expression “ joli rouge ” (pretty red), referring to the red version of the flag flown by pirates, which meant “ no quarter« .

The flag ofEmmanuel Wynne , which was hoisted on the mainmast of theAventure , is made up of two femurs crossed over each other, a skull , and an hourglass. The meaning of the bones is fairly self-explanatory, and the hourglass represents how little time his opponents had left to decide whether to flee or surrender if they did not want to die.

We created this slightly restyled version of the original pirate flag to pay tribute to Emmanuel Wynne, but also to express our share of patriotic chauvinism. France’s heritage is immense, and we are often pioneers in many fields without getting the credit. Let’s be proud of it.
